Captain Gary V. Smith
Jail Administrator
Captain Smith began his Law Enforcement Career in 1974 in the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated in the top 10% of his class at the Military Police School at Fort Gordon Georgia.  He chose  Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, in Havelock, North Carolina as his duty station.  He worked in basic patrol and later transfered to shore patrol at Atlantic Beach.  His job responsabilities were court liasion,interaction with local, county and state law enforcement agencies when dealing with military personnel.  Smith was reassigned as Watch Commander where he commanded a staff of 26 MP's and had the primary responsability of security for the Air Station.

After leaving the Marine Corps. He went into civilian law enforcement in North Liberty, Indiana.  In North liberty he attained the rank of Assistant Chief.  Later he moved to Walkerton, Indiana and worked as a patrol sergeant. 

In 1986 he moved to Florida where he worked for the Orange County Department of Corrections.

In August 1993 Smith came to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office to begin the operation of the new Franklin County Detention Center, as the  Jail Administrator.He has served in that capacity ever since. 

In addition to the Military Police School at fort Gordon, Gary Graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, Florida Corrections Academy, Florida Law Enforcement academy and the Georgia Police Academy.  He has advanced certifications in police photography, first responder, media relations, radar operator, and levels I, II, and III Management training.  He is also a TASER Instructor.

Civic activities include Member of Lavonia Masonic Lodge #241 F&AM, Member of Lavonia First Baptist Church former sunday school teacher, and past chaiman of the personnel committee.  He was vice president of his Franklin County Leadership Class.

Gary and his wife Cindy have a daughter Hannah, and they reside in Lavonia.
