| TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff's Office are charged with many duties, traffic enforcement is only one of them. There are 22 miles of I-85 in Franklin County, this highway alone is enough to keep two officers busy. We also have 652 additional road miles to patrol. We utilize RADAR and LiDAR (laser) speed detection devices in an effort to enforce the speed law. DUI is another major problem in traffic enforcement. The most deadly problem on our highways. Our deputies put forth an extra effort to combat impaired driving in Franklin County. This is done to protect our citizens and visitors form other who are operating their vehicle while impaired. We have portable breath testing devices and an Intoxilizer 5000, which is used to measure the amout of blood alcohol in a suspects system. Many of the deputies have advanced training in DUI detection and Standardized Field Sobriety. Also some are trained in drugs that impaire driving and as Drug Recognition Experts. Franklin County is partnered with the Governors Office of Highway Safety, in enforcement campaigns like Click It or Ticket, Operation Zero Tolerance, and Summer HEAT. These campaigns are not just to issue citations, but to educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving, operation a vehicles without seatbelts, and excessive speed. Sheriff Thomas is proud to offer the P.R.I.D.E. course to our citizens. P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing Incidents of Driver Error) is a free two-hour course designed to help parents and new teen drivers, ages 14-16, learn how to manage the 40 hours of supervised practice driving time required by Georgia Law, P.R.I.D.E. addresses driver attitude, knowledge and behavior, rather than technical hands-on driver skills. It is designed to complement existing drivers education programs. To find out more about a P.R.I.D.E. class contact Lt. Chris Looney at the Sheriff's Office, 706-384-2525. |
